Business Intelligence History
The idea of business intelligence goes back to Sun Tzu’s “Art of War.” Tzu believed that in order to win a war, you must have complete knowledge of your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of your the enemy. This is the central idea in present-day business intelligence. Companies must know themselves better than their competitors, and they must know their competitors better. War and business are a lot alike considering that with BI, one must sift through heaps of data (both external and internal) for management to then make strategies for where to take the business and marketing. Warfare involves strategic plans as well. BI is the process of gaining information about every element of your market. Simply understanding the customer is not enough; a business must understand its competitors, and itself.
Here is what I did to generate ideas and what I recommend you do
Here is what I did to generate ideas and what I recommend you do:
1.) First, think about “why” you want to start a business. Really..why? Think at least 15 mins about this and it will come. It may be just money, it may just be freedom..or both. Whatever it is just figure it out.
2.) Next, figure out what motivates you. There has to be something that you think about to keep you going and determined. For me its cars and motorcycles. I’m really into these things. Whenever I need to get motivated I go to YouTube and do a search for some guy taking delivery of his new Porsche..or something like that. I study people who I want to be like and imagine my life being better than theirs in the future. That keeps me going.
You may be into other things… plants, horses, great outdoors, skydiving, eating potato chips (jk). Whatever it is, use that to keep you motivated and to get your subconscious mind working on “how” you are going to get these things. Your subconscious mind will show you the way.
3.) Now you will want to get yourself a daily planner. One that goes all year long and leaves you enough room to write about 6 lines per day. You will need to take this planner with you wherever you go. If you’re at work on the computer, keep it to your side all day. Take it to Subway with you. You will need to start recording the tiniest ideas that pop into your head that relate to business ideas.
You may get a very small thought that last 1/1000 of a second and you may think its too small to matter, but it’s not. It does matter. That micro thought will lead to bigger and stronger thoughts over time. This may take a few weeks to come to you but IT WILL. And when it does, you better be ready with that planner because you will have so many ideas that you wont know what to do with them.
4.) The next obstacle you’ll run into is deciding on a chosen few ideas and ACTING on them. Its one thing to talk or dream about owning that nice house one day, but successful people DO something about it. Don’t be a talker and don’t be a dreamer. Be a doer. Get things done. Anyone can talk, not everyone can act. Otherwise, the world would be filled with satisfied successful people.
10 Surefire tips to make the most out of your business cards
Business cards are one of the most powerful and inexpensive marketing tools you can use. Here are 10 surefire tips to make the most out of your business cards:
- Your business card must communicate more than just your contact information. Make sure that your card includes a tag line that explains what you or your company do.
- Order them in large numbers. By ordering 1000 your cost per card will be significantly lower than if you ordered 500.
- Even if you can produce your business cards at home using an inkjet printer, have your business cards professionally made by a printing company. Your business card will be the first impression your prospects receive of your business, so let them convey the best possible one.
- Avoid using standard clip art as your business logo. A logo brings credibility and brand awareness, so before you invest in business cards have a logo professionally made for your business. Nowadays, there are online companies that can produce a professional logo for as little as $25, so there is no excuse for not having one made.
- Put up a website and use the URL in your business cards. If you don’t have a website, people will notice the absence of a web address in your business card and, depending on the business you are in, it may make you lose credibility.
- Keep all the information in your business card current. If you changed address or phone number, don’t scratch the old number and write down the new one by hand; get new business cards.
- Keep your business card simple. Don’t use too many fonts or try to cram too much information in it. Try to use a pleasant layout and make sure that your main message (your tagline or your unique selling proposition) doesn’t get lost.
- If you live in the US, limit your business card size to 3.5″ x 2″. Anything bigger will not fit in standard card holders and your card may end up in the trash. Business cards in Europe tend to be larger, but so are the wallets and card holders.
- Make sure that your business card reflects your image. If you are an artist or a graphic designer, it is OK to use trendy colors and fonts. If you are an investment banker, a sober layout and colors such as blue or gray work better.
- Your business card is an integral part of your brand or corporate identity strategy. It should follow the same graphics standards as the rest of your communications material (stationary, brochures, letterheads, etc.).
